About the cause:

People who have a mental illness can experience homelessness more than others. They are often released from hospital or jail without the proper community supports in place. People with mental illness experience homelessness for longer periods of time and can have less contact with family and friends. It has been reported that up to 67 per cent of people who were homeless have had a mental health issue in their lifetime, which can increase the complexity and duration of their homelessness, resulting in many becoming chronically homeless. In Canada, it is estimated that homelessness costs seven billion dollars each year in health care, justice and social service use.

Community-based mental health services play an important role in ending homelessness. Homelessness can be drastically reduced when people are able to access stable housing as well as the necessary community supports. This is where the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna comes in. CMHA Kelowna strives to break the cycle of homelessness by supporting people to find a good, safe place to call home. They do this through utilizing the Housing First Strategy within their various supportive housing projects which support Kelowna’s most vulnerable population – providing them with stable housing and wrap-around supports so they can thrive.

Join us in supporting them in the journey to ending homelessness in our community.
