Primaris’ Orchard Park Shopping Centre Golf Tournament Drives Home Importance of Mental Health

primaris2016 marked the second year of Primaris’ Charity Golf Tournament and partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association. The tournament, which has now raised a grand total of $147,200, supports local mental health programs and supports, equipping people with the necessary tools to prevent and recover from mental illness.

“Choosing CMHA as our charity of choice was founded in our belief that we can be advocates of awareness and support for mental health initiatives. By bringing together people who share the same belief, who may have experienced the need for support, we can be the catalyst for open communication about mental health,” states Donna Markin, General Manager of Primaris Orchard Park Shopping Centre. “As an employer, as a business and as a community member, I am thrilled with the money we were able to raise for CMHA.” [Read more…]

The Food Quilt in Action (From Field to Fork to Research Event Summary)

img_6387The Purpose of this event was (1) to return research done in the community back to the community and (2) to launch the ‘Food Quilt’, a new movement to connect people and groups in support of food security in the Central Okanagan.

On Thursday April 21, 2016, over 60 guests gathered at the Canadian Mental Health Association and enjoyed 7 presentations that showcased research related to local food security. These presentations were done in the fast-paced style known as pechakucha. Following the presentations, the guests connected with one another, shared stories, and enjoyed organic wine from Summerhill Winery and local cheeses and snacks. [Read more…]

Housing First is Coming to Kelowna

The issue of homelessness in Kelowna has come to the forefront of discussion and media coverage. On a weekly, if not daily basis, there are articles written and opinions shared about the urgency and visibility of the situation.

Homelessness is just as complex as people are unique; complex issues require complex solutions. Of those living without a home, affordability of housing was listed as the No. 1 area of concern. The other most commonly cited reasons for housing vulnerability include mental health issues, problematic substance use, physical health issues and disabilities, trauma, and family conflict.
