Athletes and Disordered Eating

February 9, 2016 By Aaryn Secker Leave a Comment

(Note: CMHA Kelowna originally wrote this blog entry for ProSmart Hockey and we have reblogged it here. Make sure to check ProSmart for more great articles on athletes and sport.)

Studies suggest that disordered eating may be more common among athletes and yet potentially more difficult to recognize. If you’re coaching an athletic team, or parenting an athlete, it’s critical to understand the impact of disordered eating in sport. However, your job is not to try to diagnose an athlete. CMHA and BCHL Want Players to #TalkToday

February 1, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna’s partnership with the West Kelowna Warriors continued last week with volunteers attending a game to cheer on the team and sell pucks to raise funds for mental health programs and services. The partnership is part of the BC-wide #TalkToday initiative encouraging athletes to be more aware of their mental health and seek help when they have concerns.

Previously, our community education facilitators have provided presentations to players and families (including billet families) on mental health, stigma reduction, and how to have those conversations with each other. We look forward to future educational opportunities with the West Kelowna Warriors.

B.C. Hockey League and Canadian Mental Health Association launch new mental health program

October 7, 2015 By Leave a Comment

Talk TodayHockey and mental health advocates in British Columbia have partnered to develop what’s being described as the most comprehensive mental health program for amateur sport in Canada.

On Tuesday the Canadian Mental Health Association and the B.C. Hockey League announced their new initiative, Talk Today, which offers confidential support to players in need.

“It’s really about taking down, taking away that shame and the stigma so that young people can reach out for help,” said Canadian Mental Health Association CEO Bev Gutray.
