Primaris’ Orchard Park Shopping Centre drives home the importance of mental health, for the third year in a row. The company’s recent golf tournament, in partnership with Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna, raised an astounding $85,250.
The event marked the third year of the tournament, which has raised a total of more than $232,000 for local mental health programs and services.
“When we originally chose CMHA Kelowna as our charity of choice three years ago it was because we firmly believed that we could be proponents of awareness and support for mental health initiatives,” says Donna Markin, General Manager of Primaris Orchard Park Shopping Centre. “Now, more than ever, our team is steadfast in our conviction that we can be catalysts for communication about mental health by bringing people together who share that same belief and who may have experienced the need for support.” Markin adds, “As an employer, as a business and as a community member, I am thrilled with the money we were able to raise for CMHA Kelowna.”
This year’s tournament raised more money than each of the previous two years, 100% of which will stay locally. “A gift of this size means that more than 2000 people, right here in our community, will be directly equipped with the necessary tools to prevent and recover from mental illness,” says Shelagh Turner, Executive Director of CMHA Kelowna. “The time and energy the Primaris team puts in to making this event such a success is incredible and we are so thankful to them for the impact they are making.”
In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health or addiction problem that requires treatment and support. A serious health problem in Canada, mental illness, can affect relationships, education, productivity and overall quality of life. Fortunately, CMHA offers the promise of a better life for many individuals living with mental health issues.
