Suicide Prevention

The courses below are hosted by CMHA Kelowna and open for individual registration a few times per year. For open dates, visit our Event Calendar.

Alternatively, organizations, workplaces, teams, and other groups can book their own course with a minimum of 10 participants (maximum 30) to be hosted at CMHA Kelowna or your own location. Please send us an email to book your own course.

ASIST and SafeTALK are two different suicide prevention training workshops created by LivingWorks and offered through CMHA Kelowna by certified instructors. Read below to learn more about which one is right for you.

safeTALK – 3.5 hours

Suicide alertness training that prepares anyone to be more aware of the signs that someone may have thoughts of suicide, how to approach the topic in conversation, and how to connect that person to an interventionist in the community.

Training features:

  • Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
  • Access to support from a local community resource person
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • The simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
  • Hands-on skills practice and development

Course fees:

  • Individual $50+GST
  • Group rate: $400 + $10/person for materials + GST
  • Subsidized group rate may be available for student, senior, and non-profit groups

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) – 2 days

ASIST trains participants how to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide, including the creation of a safety plan. The ASIST model teaches effective intervention skills while helping to build suicide prevention networks in the community.

Workshop features:

  • Presentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers
  • A scientifically proven intervention model
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • Group discussions
  • Skills practice and development
  • A balance of challenge and safety

  • Individual $285+GST

  • Subsidized student, volunteer, non-profit, senior, and group rates may be available
