Hitting the links for mental health

September 17, 2019 By Leave a Comment

It was the 5th year that more than 130 golfers came together for Primaris’ Orchard Park Shopping Centre golf tournament to tee off for mental health in Kelowna. The annual event links the importance of mental health awareness, programs and support for everyone in the community – this year raising $105,000 for Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna.

The money from this year’s tournament is helping to fund CMHA Kelowna’s newest initiative called Discovery College. “In life, when we know more, when we have more education and support we can all do better,” says Donna Markin, General Manager of Primaris Orchard Park Shopping Centre. “That’s why we are excited about Discovery College because you don’t have to have a mental illness to attend – it is for anyone and everyone.”

CMHA Kelowna Executive Director Shelagh Turner say Discovery College will officially open in January, 2020. “Each of us is different – each of us responds to challenges in a different way. But there is commonality in opening up the conversation and learning from each other. Discovery College brings together real people, with real experiences, working together and sharing successes so we can feel better about our relationships, about work…about life.”

Turner adds that the unique element of this golf tournament is that 100% of the money raised goes directly to CMHA Kelowna. “We are so grateful to the sponsors the golfers, the volunteers and the Orchard Park team for this huge show of support towards helping anyone in our community discover what is possible for them.”

The Mental Health I$$ue
