Community Agencies Partner to Support Healthy Aging

January 10, 2017 By Leave a Comment

Opportunities to socialize and a sense of connection are important for mental health and healthy aging. Unfortunately, many seniors in our community struggle with isolation and loneliness, increasing their vulnerability to depression and disability. The Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna (CMHA Kelowna), has teamed up with Kelowna Community Resources and several other organizations in the central Okanagan to provide outreach for older adults.

“Our goal is to provide mental health education training to 100 staff members and volunteers at key agencies who will be able to match at least 60 older adults with a trained outreach volunteer,” says Alison Kyte, Wellness Programs and Education Manager at CMHA Kelowna. [Read more…]

Help Available for Families Needing to Find Mental Health Support Throughout BC Interior Region

May 24, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna, in partnership with Interior Health, has launched the Supporting Our Families: Interior Region Family Navigation Project to help parents and caregivers find and access mental health and substance use supports in their communities.

Parents and caregivers of children and youth up to age 25, who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to find services or information about mental health and substance use issues, can now call a toll-free number to connect with a Family Navigator. The Family Navigator will listen to concerns, find out what supports are needed, and then assist the caller in finding relevant, local community resources. [Read more…]

CMHA and BCHL Want Players to #TalkToday

February 1, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna’s partnership with the West Kelowna Warriors continued last week with volunteers attending a game to cheer on the team and sell pucks to raise funds for mental health programs and services. The partnership is part of the BC-wide #TalkToday initiative encouraging athletes to be more aware of their mental health and seek help when they have concerns.

Previously, our community education facilitators have provided presentations to players and families (including billet families) on mental health, stigma reduction, and how to have those conversations with each other. We look forward to future educational opportunities with the West Kelowna Warriors.

Want to learn more? Check out Myles Matilla, Youth Ambassador for CMHA Kelowna, in this great #TalkToday video:
