Running for Mental Health

August 18, 2016 By Leave a Comment

PACE

On June 26, thirty runners participated in the PACE Sports Fitness Charity Run. Embodying the slogan, “Running feels good. Giving back feels good. Doing both feels great!” the runners raised $9,145 for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna and District Branch (CMHA Kelowna) by making the 30km trek from Kelowna to Naramata.

CMHA Kelowna has been the charity of choice for this run as well as spring and fall runs for the past 3 years, raising more than $21,000. PACE have been longstanding community partners, raising awareness and funds through portions of registration, barbeques, and more.

This event held special meaning for many of the runners who have experienced mental health issues or recently lost a loved one. With at least 1 in 5 Canadians experiencing mental health issues, this is a cause that affects a large number of people in our community.

“Finding funding for our prevention and mental health-promoting programs can be extremely difficult which is why we’re so thankful to PACE Sports Fitness Charity Run for choosing to raise money for us,” says Candace Giesbrecht, Director of Community Engagement.  “One of the best parts for us, though, was learning how connected this group is to the cause of mental health.  This was more than just a fundraising run for so many of the participants.”

PACE Sports Fitness organizes several running events and training sessions in the Central Okanagan. New and seasoned runners alike can contact Rene [email protected]  to get involved.

CMHA and BCHL Want Players to #TalkToday

February 1, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna’s partnership with the West Kelowna Warriors continued last week with volunteers attending a game to cheer on the team and sell pucks to raise funds for mental health programs and services. The partnership is part of the BC-wide #TalkToday initiative encouraging athletes to be more aware of their mental health and seek help when they have concerns.

Previously, our community education facilitators have provided presentations to players and families (including billet families) on mental health, stigma reduction, and how to have those conversations with each other. We look forward to future educational opportunities with the West Kelowna Warriors.

5 Reasons to Narrow Your Focus (Corporate Social Responsibility)

December 21, 2015 By Leave a Comment

As a business owner, it seems as though you`re participating in a never-ending juggling act as you navigate through a multitude of priorities. You care about your community, and recognize that in order for your business to be healthy and thriving, the community around you also needs to be healthy and thriving. You know the business benefits that come from doing your part; market position, employee attraction and retention, and greater profitability. To date, it’s just been easier to field the multiple calls, letters and emails from local non-profits looking for support than to spend the time determining which non-profit or area of impact you want to focus on.

Wait a minute. It’s easier to field the multiple calls, letters and emails, and then spend the time getting up to speed on each organization; the work they do, the people and partnerships involved, all for you to say yes or no, not once a week, but more than likely several times in one week? That’s a lot of work! [Read more…]
