Participant Christmas Celebration a Huge Success!

December 3, 2015 By Leave a Comment

ChristmasCelebrationEach year, the Kelowna branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, in partnership with the Mental Health Department of Interior Health Kelowna, hosts a Christmas Celebration for our program participants. For many, this is the only celebration they experience during this holiday season.

Thank you for making our Christmas Celebration a HUGE success! 210 program participants of CMHA Kelowna and the Mental Health Department of Interior Health were able to enjoy a nutritious meal, some holiday cheer, and received a small gift. Events such as these can provide opportunities for community connection and can reduce isolation – both of which are important on the road to recovery from mental health issues.

We originally anticipated 150 attendees but, thankfully, your generosity helped us exceed our goals for 2015 and no one was left out.

THANK YOU!

How to Improve Mental Health Literacy

October 22, 2015 By Leave a Comment

Mental Health LiteracyJasmin Yee has written a great article at Healthy Minds Canada called “I Wish I Had Learned Mental Health Literacy Earlier.” We recommend you give it a quick read. The article raises some interesting points, such as the importance of mental health literacy in being able to advocate for oneself, as well as being able to put words to our thoughts and feelings.

So, how can we foster mental health literacy in our children? We’ve compiled a few links to get you started.

For families and caregivers of children, youth, or young adults with mental health issues, the links below are valuable but don’t forget about our Family Navigation services. CMHA Kelowna’s Family Navigator can help you access the resources you need in our community and also hosts events and support groups.

August 20, 2015 By Leave a Comment

“I know I don’t talk about these black clouds often, but I want to. I hate the silence it forces me to keep. There’s a certain freedom when it comes to talking openly about the monster. Help me find that freedom.”
