Keep Mental Health Top of Mind in BC

May 11, 2017 By Leave a Comment

Over the past year, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) across BC has been fighting for increased mental health supports in our province. We are committed to creating a mentally healthy British Columbia, and we rely on supporters like you to help us get there. Together, we will.

In many ways it has been a fruitful year for mental health. The BC provincial government signed the federal health accord that identified mental health and addiction care as a priority in the health funding agreement. In addition, the 2017 BC provincial budget made significant investments in child and youth mental health. Earlier this month, we celebrated CMHA’s own Mental Health Week, a week-long celebration of mental health.

Still, we have friends and family members not able to access the treatment they need to recover from mental illness. Suicide continues to kill 500 British Columbians annually. And emergency rooms continue to be the only resort for far too many British Columbians who are suffering.

As we move into a new phase for our province, please help us continue the momentum toward early intervention so that people who are struggling with mental health issues get the support and treatment they need before a crisis happens—b4stage4. More than ever, we need your support to continue to push our leaders to make mental health a priority for BC.

Can you donate today? Your support will keep mental health top of mind in BC.

There’s no health without mental health.

5 Ways to #GETLOUD for CMHA Mental Health Week

May 2, 2017 By Leave a Comment

During CMHA Mental Health Week, Canadians take time to reflect on their mental health. But we do more than just reflect. We get loud about it. Join our Mayor and our Prime Minister in getting loud for mental health!
1. GET LOUD BY SPEAKING UP!
We often suffer silently. One of the ways to #GETLOUD is to speak up. Talk openly to someone you feel safe with: a loved one or a friend. If they’re informed and supportive, they won’t judge or shame you about your mental health concerns. Also consider talking to your family doctor. Tell them if you need support. Click around CMHA Kelowna’s website to learn about the programs and services we offer. If you’re in crisis, don’t wait. Go to your hospital emergency department or call 911. If you’re concerned about a friend, we have workshops like safeTALK (a suicide alertness training) to help you feel more prepared to help a loved one.

2. GET LOUD FOR A HEALTHIER WORKPLACE
You can promote mental health where you work. One way to start is to book a CMHA Kelowna presentation that provides education and addresses mental health in the workplace. Our experienced facilitators offer a wide range of presentations and we can even build the perfect package for your workplace. Click here to learn more about what we can offer workplaces and subscribe to our Workplace E-Newsletter. [Read more…]

Mayor Colin Basran Proclaims May 1-7 Mental Health Week in Kelowna

May 1, 2017 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna urges the community to Get Loud about mental health.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna kicks off CMHA’s 66th Annual Mental Health Week (May 1-7) by issuing a call to action to our community to speak up and GET LOUD for better access to the mental health services individuals and families need.

“Mental Health Week is important because it gets us talking about something that affects each and every one of us,” says Mayor Colin Basran.  “This week puts an exclamation mark on the need to Get Loud about mental health in our community”.

1 in 7 young people in our community struggle with mental health issues. 75% of mental illness starts in childhood. The sad fact is that less than a 30% of those who need help actually get it. “CMHA Kelowna believes in a mentally healthy community – one where people aren’t afraid or embarrassed to ask for help. A community where the right help is available at the right time. One of the biggest barriers we face is stigma that is perpetuated by silence.” Says Shelagh Turner, Executive Director of CMHA Kelowna. [Read more…]
