Budget 2019’s child and youth mental health funding begins to fill service gap

Victoria, BC (February 19, 2019) – “Significant new funding for child and youth mental health and substance use services will begin to fill the huge gap that exists between the needs of BC’s children, youth and young adults, and available services, and support implementation of the Province’s anticipated child & youth mental health plan,” said Kendra Milne, Senior Director, Policy and Planning of the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division. “We know that many mental health and substance use problems arise in childhood or youth and it is a key time to ensure we support kids and young people to thrive and be well – these new investments have the potential to improve lifelong outcomes for kids who need them.”

Heath House will help meet urgent housing need in Kelowna

People experiencing homelessness have a new place to call home with the Heath House opening its doors in Kelowna.

In response to the need to address homelessness, the Province, with the support of the City of Kelowna, purchased and renovated the former Good Night Inn and Howard Johnson Travel Lodge at 2639 Highway 97. Renamed Heath House, 40 newly renovated homes are now providing supportive housing for people in need.

Without a Home: The National Youth Homelessness Survey

Without a Home: The National Youth Homelessness Survey is the first pan-Canadian study of young people who experience homelessness. With 1,103 respondents from almost 50 different communities across the country, the study provides detailed information about youth homelessness in Canada. This research was conducted by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, in partnership with A Way Home Canada and The National Learning Community on Youth Homelessness, and funded by the Home Depot Canada Foundation. It would not have been possible without the dedicated work of 57 Canadian youth-serving agencies, all of whom actively engaged young people to complete the survey. [Read more…]
