Community Agencies Partner to Support Healthy Aging

January 10, 2017 By Leave a Comment

Opportunities to socialize and a sense of connection are important for mental health and healthy aging. Unfortunately, many seniors in our community struggle with isolation and loneliness, increasing their vulnerability to depression and disability. The Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna (CMHA Kelowna), has teamed up with Kelowna Community Resources and several other organizations in the central Okanagan to provide outreach for older adults.

When you get a chance to enjoy great food, warm company, and support a cause near and dear to your heart, that’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss. The organizers of Okanagan Oktoberfeast offer this to our community annually, with proceeds contributing to important local causes. For the last two years, Oktoberfeast has supported youth mental health initiatives through the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna and District Branch (CMHA Kelowna).

Over 100 people attended Oktoberfeast this year, raising $12,000 towards the opening of an integrated youth clinic in Kelowna. Guests were treated to live music and a menu of wild fish and game. Delicacies included scallops with wild boar bacon, venison sliders, ostrich liver terrine, and over two dozen other creations. [Read more…]

Without a Home: The National Youth Homelessness Survey is the first pan-Canadian study of young people who experience homelessness. With 1,103 respondents from almost 50 different communities across the country, the study provides detailed information about youth homelessness in Canada. This research was conducted by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, in partnership with A Way Home Canada and The National Learning Community on Youth Homelessness, and funded by the Home Depot Canada Foundation. It would not have been possible without the dedicated work of 57 Canadian youth-serving agencies, all of whom actively engaged young people to complete the survey. [Read more…]
