5 Ways to #GETLOUD for CMHA Mental Health Week

May 2, 2017 By Leave a Comment

During CMHA Mental Health Week, Canadians take time to reflect on their mental health. But we do more than just reflect. We get loud about it. Join our Mayor and our Prime Minister in getting loud for mental health!
1. GET LOUD BY SPEAKING UP!
We often suffer silently. One of the ways to #GETLOUD is to speak up. Talk openly to someone you feel safe with: a loved one or a friend. If they’re informed and supportive, they won’t judge or shame you about your mental health concerns. Also consider talking to your family doctor. Tell them if you need support. Click around CMHA Kelowna’s website to learn about the programs and services we offer. If you’re in crisis, don’t wait. Go to your hospital emergency department or call 911. If you’re concerned about a friend, we have workshops like safeTALK (a suicide alertness training) to help you feel more prepared to help a loved one.

2. GET LOUD FOR A HEALTHIER WORKPLACE
You can promote mental health where you work. One way to start is to book a CMHA Kelowna presentation that provides education and addresses mental health in the workplace. Our experienced facilitators offer a wide range of presentations and we can even build the perfect package for your workplace. Click here to learn more about what we can offer workplaces and subscribe to our Workplace E-Newsletter. [Read more…]

UBC president shares his story of recovery at mental health Summit

April 3, 2017 By Leave a Comment

A strong advocate for student well-being, University of British Columbia president Santa J. Ono emphasizes importance of mental health support across the education spectrum at 7th annual Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses Summit

Vancouver, B.C. – It was during his studies that Professor Santa J. Ono first experienced depression and twice tried to take his own life.

“I studied hard, and I also partied hard,” says Ono of his student experience. “I learned the hard way the importance of balance and support.”

Now 15th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Ono is committed to promoting and safeguarding the well-being of his students and the UBC community.

On April 4 Ono will share his story of resilience at the annual Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses Summit event, a post-secondary initiative of the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division (CMHA BC). [Read more…]

Help Available for Families Needing to Find Mental Health Support Throughout BC Interior Region

May 24, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna, in partnership with Interior Health, has launched the Supporting Our Families: Interior Region Family Navigation Project to help parents and caregivers find and access mental health and substance use supports in their communities.

Parents and caregivers of children and youth up to age 25, who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to find services or information about mental health and substance use issues, can now call a toll-free number to connect with a Family Navigator. The Family Navigator will listen to concerns, find out what supports are needed, and then assist the caller in finding relevant, local community resources. [Read more…]
