Help Available for Families Needing to Find Mental Health Support Throughout BC Interior Region

May 24, 2016 By Leave a Comment

CMHA Kelowna, in partnership with Interior Health, has launched the Supporting Our Families: Interior Region Family Navigation Project to help parents and caregivers find and access mental health and substance use supports in their communities.

Parents and caregivers of children and youth up to age 25, who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to find services or information about mental health and substance use issues, can now call a toll-free number to connect with a Family Navigator. The Family Navigator will listen to concerns, find out what supports are needed, and then assist the caller in finding relevant, local community resources. [Read more…]

Thank You Prospera Credit Union & United Way

April 18, 2016 By Leave a Comment

dayofcaring

On Friday, April 15, 2016, several awesome staff from Prospera Credit Union donated their time to CMHA Kelowna for the United Way’s Day of Caring.

Having a building that is inviting and well-maintained is critical for an organization such as ours; it is important that guests, participants, staff, and volunteers all feel welcome and can come through our doors with a sense of pride.

The team from Prospera weren’t afraid to get down and dirty to help us with our spring cleaning. After their great work tidying, pruning, weeding, and cleaning windows, our space is looking better than ever. Thank you Prospera Credit Union and the United Way!

Have an Old Guitar? Let Its Legacy Live On By Giving It a New Home!

April 6, 2016 By Leave a Comment

Guitars are more than just the sum of their parts. Guitars have sentimental value; they can represent a moment in time, conjure emotions, and bring forth memories from the past. Guitars can also be instruments for recovery.

If you have a guitar that’s gathering dust, you have the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of others.

A small music group has started in the Wellness Development Centre at the Kelowna branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. This group helps to foster a sense of community and purpose, and learning how to play an instrument can be a very empowering experience. Led by participants for participants, the group has grown over the past few months and there are now more people who want to learn to play guitar than there are guitars available.

Our amazing volunteer instructor has been bringing his guitars for people to use, but he simply does not have enough for everyone.

Just think: the same guitar that your child learned to play on, or carried the tune for songs around a campfire, could continue its legacy in the hands of someone working on a fresh start.

We will need at least six guitars to meet the current demand. If you’d like to donate a guitar, please call 250-861-3644 or email Shari Slattery at [email protected]
