Community Agencies Partner to Support Healthy Aging

January 10, 2017 By Leave a Comment

Opportunities to socialize and a sense of connection are important for mental health and healthy aging. Unfortunately, many seniors in our community struggle with isolation and loneliness, increasing their vulnerability to depression and disability. The Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna (CMHA Kelowna), has teamed up with Kelowna Community Resources and several other organizations in the central Okanagan to provide outreach for older adults.

“Our goal is to provide mental health education training to 100 staff members and volunteers at key agencies who will be able to match at least 60 older adults with a trained outreach volunteer,” says Alison Kyte, Wellness Programs and Education Manager at CMHA Kelowna. [Read more…]

Thank You for Supporting Our Christmas Celebration!

December 15, 2016 By Leave a Comment

Our community is amazing! Because of you, we surpassed our fundraising goal for the Christmas Celebration held on December 14th! You helped us raise $5,010 to throw an amazing holiday party for about 200 participants of CMHA Kelowna and Interior Health programs. For many, it will be the only celebration they have this year. Every attendee enjoyed a delicious meal and took home a small gift.

Highlights included a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and the grade 6 students from Anne McClymont school who serenaded us with holiday songs. We couldn’t have done it without the generosity of our community and our many fantastic volunteers. Thank you also to Lakeview Market for donating much of the produce for this event!

Missed this opportunity to make a difference? Don’t worry, you can still do magic!

The 7th and Final Annual Basran Charity Open, held this past August, raised $28,332 for the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation and Canadian Mental Health Kelowna.

One of the largest annual golf tournaments in the valley for the last seven years, over 1,400 golfers have participated and $100,000 has been raised for healthcare in our community since the beginning of the Basran Charity Open. Mayor Colin Basran has always kept community impact top of mind.  “Everyone who participates in the event does it to make a difference,” explains Basran.  “Thanks to everyone who has helped me organize this event and who has participated over the years. And thanks to my Grandma Basran for being the inspiration for wanting to raise money to help others. I am so grateful!” [Read more…]
