Managing back to school anxiety in young children

Returning to school after summer vacation can be an exciting time for kids, but it can also be stressful for them and their parents. The start of school may be especially challenging for kids who are starting at kindergarten or a new school.

Some anxiety is a normal response and most kids experience mild back-to-school uneasiness that gradually fades once they meet their teacher and settle in to class.

Here are tips for helping nervous kids prepare a new school year and enjoy a successful and smooth transition back to school.

Hundreds of youth accessing Foundry Kelowna services

An innovative model of care that’s supporting Kelowna’s youth is having considerable impact. Since opening its doors in September 2017, 900 youth have visited Foundry Kelowna and for most, this is the first time they are seeking help.

“Foundry Kelowna is transforming the way youth and their families are getting help in our community,” says CMHA Kelowna Executive Director, Shelagh Turner. “Now, youth don’t have to ask where to go to get help, they just need to walk through the doors and we can provide the counselling and services they need.”

Telus steps up for youth

Young people will be supported through a stepped care model at Foundry Kelowna, thanks to a grant from the Telus Thompson Okanagan Community Board.

Foundry Kelowna will open in September, transforming how young people and their families access the resources and support they need. The new centre will be an integrated youth and family clinic that unites partner organizations to provide coordinated services addressing the primary care, mental health, substance use, counselling and social service needs of youth 12 – 24 and their families.
